Is "The Situation" Tired of Situps?

I was sad to see 'The Situation' leave DTWS this week. Not that he didn't deserve to go. That was one bad dance. But he really was quite different on the show than I expected him to be. He respected the show, and the job he was hired to do.

After all this was a young man with dreams. He had wanted to be an underwear model and saw that dream fail to materialize. I think we can all relate. I bet there are a few underwear companies now that would hire him if they could meet his price.

In post show interviews I heard him mention several times that the character you see on Jersey Shore is just one part of him and he is looking to branch out, looking for career longevity. I think he understands that those abs won't last forever. I was glad to see that he had this much self-awareness and wish him the best.

Who is Russell Brand? and Other Entertainment Observations.

Who is Russell Brand and why is he popular? I am sorry I still expect performers to be attractive. And I suspect his accent is put on. The Queen doesn't talk like that and neither does Helen Mirren. The most frustrating thing about him is the fact that even though he repulses me I find myself staying tuned in while he is on. Explain that to me. Maybe I am just jealous because he is so thin.

I do not however want to see him in the remake of Arthur. I didn't like the original with Dudley Moore either and Liza always makes me jittery.

I just realized he is actually attractive until he opens his mouth. Shouldn't people have more teeth than gums unless they are over 90?

I have tried (although not very hard) to understand the appeal of Modern Family. I don't find the gay couple groundbreaking. In fact they seem a little stereotypical to me. I only want to see attractive gay people on TV or at least attractive straight people like Eric McCormack  portraying them. These two do not count.

I don't find Rico Rodriguez funny either. I hate precocious children. Take off the hat. You are trying way too hard, kid.

My favorite new show of the season so far is The Defenders. I was never a John Belushi fan so of course I never paid much attention to his brother,Jim. I never caught one episode of Life With Jim. But I love him and Jerry O'Donnell in this show. I always love shows set in Las Vegas. There is always the chance you will see a glitzy showgirl passing by.

If I ever got in trouble in Vegas they are exactly the kind of lawyers I would want on my side. They seem like the type of people you could meet in a cheesy Las Vegas lounge. Of course I have never been allowed into a cheesy Las Vegas lounnge. The bouncers don't let people who play the I Love Lucy or Wizard of Oz slots inside.

I have never understood the appeal of Jennifer Aniston, Phillip Seymour Hoffnman or Ricky Gervais.

I would however like to see more of Niecy Nash, Joan Cusack and Adam Haufman, who may not be very well known but I loved him in a little TV movie called Loving Leah.

But the best entertainment development of the past year has to be the return of Joan Rivers. Well she never really went away did she? Thank goodness, I say.

She was the subject of a fabulous documentary this summer, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, She is back on E! every Friday evening with Fashion Police, where she regularly shocks her young co-hosts with her wonderfully offensive observations. This is quite an achievement when you realize that one of her co-host is Kelly Osbourne. Anyone who can shock someone who grew up with Ozzy has accomplished the near impossible.

If you aren't watching this show you are missing some of the best standup comedy on television. (which Joan delivers sitting down)  The things some celebritites wear out in public these days makes perfect fodder for Joan. I also hear she and Melissa have a new reality show slated for WE this January.

I love her and hope she lives forever. From the loooks of things her nose is going to collapse from too much plastic surgery before she does.

No Driving Through the Chip Aisle

Is it just me or are there more sick people out there lately? I mean the ones that need an electric cart or oxygen tank at Wal-Mart.

Didn't these people used to stay home waiting for Richard Simmons to drop by for an inspirational talk? But because of these electric carts they are now able to get out and shop. I should be happy for them. But I am afraid I am going to run over one of them someday when I am trying to make a quick trip to pick up some Fritos.

Maybe there is something wrong with me but I would be embarrassed to have to use an electric shopping cart. But the people I see on them really seem to be enjoying the ride.Don't they ever get to Six Flags?  I suspect there are people who fight over them. Soon their will be a reality TV show devoted to seeing which contestant can grab the last one.

The greeters at Wal-Mart (many of whom could use a lift themselves) seem to be busy spending more and more of their time getting people settled into them. That's fine with me actually. I am not that friendly. I don't always like to be greeted. I am a little embarrassed by the fact that I have to  shop at Wal-Mart anyway. I would rather sneak in unnoticed.

As soon as they get settled onto their carts it seems the first place they head for is the chip aisle. I really resent this since I spend about 90% of my time in Wal-Mart in the chip aisle and I hate  reaching over those carts.

Now I know there are legitimate reasons for needing a cart; a recent hip replacement perhaps but if the reason you are requesting a cart is the fact you are bearing so much weight you can no longer walk perhaps you ought to (and I only recommend this in extreme situations) head for the fruits and vegetables.

I have also noticed more and more people with personal oxygen tanks out in public. These people worry me. I know this is a personal problem but I am afraid that I am going run over the tiny plastic tube leading from the tank with my shopping cart and suffocate them. I have never smoked but you never know when I am going to start a new bad habit. What if I suddenly lit up and tossed the match onto their oxygen tank? This is all making me extremely anxious.

Perhaps I am just not familiar enough with advances in medical technology. When I hear that someone is on oxygen I assume they are critically ill or at death's door. Every time I see a person on oxygen at Wal-Mart I have to fight my urge to ask them, "Is this trip really necessary?" Unless they're in the pharmacy.

There Goes the Glitz

I knew it was a bad sign when people started putting rhinestones on t-shirts. People just don't have a high regard for glitz anymore. Now comes word that after thirty-one years of operation the Liberace museum is closing.

I have only been ot Las Vegas once. I stayed at a little bed and breakfast run by a man who had served as Liberace's cook for several years. Like every guest he ever had  I asked him what kind of person Liberace was. He assured me that he was a very nice man who treated him very well.

Several performers from Vegas productions of Broadway shows will offer a tribute on Sunday afternoon Oct. 17th, the day it will close.

I didn't get to go to the museum when I was there. I intended to. I drove my rental car to the location but it was a Sunday and it was closed. It sat on the corner of a little strip mall. It was apparent even then that the museum was falling on hard times. Half of the stores in the strip mall were unoccupied.

A Playbill.com article quoted Jeff Koen, chairman of the Liberace Foundation regarding the closing; "On behalf of the Board of Directors, we feel it is important to close the Museum to ensure the future of the Liberace Foundation and to keep the legacy of Liberace alive ."

He was a huge TV star in the fifties. I remember his appearance on TV specials with "dancing waters"
Liberace never came out. (But he did drop a few hints) He didn't think his fans would accept it. He may have been right but you just have to wonder if the blue dye they were using for their hair effected their reasoning capability. Never trust a man that has higher hair and more jewelry than you do.

The items will be maintained and a touring exhibit is planned. I wouldn't be surprised if they found a permanent home in Branson someday.

The Robin and Roy Show

How many more days do I have to put up with these two? This must be a close race but for heaven's sake save your money and have a debate or something. I can't believe that one undecided voter is going to be decide to support either of these candidates based on the ads they have put out.

I used to think that the solution to these things would be for people to create funny ads but then I saw one that I believe was intended to be sarcastic. It was supposed to be some kind of retro ad attacking Robin Carnahan's attack ads. I seriously doubt that any one who supports Roy Blunt would be astute enough to catch the sarcasm.

You can't tell me the economy in this country is in that bad a shape if there are people out there willing to donate money to these never ending campaigns.

If the founding fathers had known that these people were going to interrupt my viewing of The Good Wife or Dancing with the Stars with political ads they would probably have written a little addendum to the first amendment prohibiting political ads. I don't think they realized someone would have invented TV when they decided to have elections every two years.

I do think the very least that people putting these ads on could do is disclose who they are. I understand the ones that are approved by the candidates. I understand who the Democratic and Republican senatorial committees are. But the ads that are sponsored by some anonymous "committee for a road back to freedom" or some other cockamamie group should be banned. I can only assume that Karl Rove is behind most of those.

It is a shame that the elections have to be held in early November when the weeks leading up to the election have all the  new shows premiering and returning series broadcasting new episodes. Finally there is something to watch on TV and we are subjected to the "Robin and Roy Show."

The least Congress could do is to schedule the elections during the summer. That way all they would interrupt would be the  Real Housewives of New Jersey, New York, Atlanta and D.C. They could eliminate the ads completely if they would just have battling housewives go to work for opposing campaigns. I would love to see Nece storm into the opposing camp's campaign headquarters and rip a wig off Kim.

Please Don't Change the Situation

It was bad enough you sent Margaret and Louis packing last week but please don't eliminate the Situation!

If you are reading this you know by now that I love me some Dancing With the Stars. What you may not know is that every year when they announce the cast I find myself like millions of Americans asking, "Where are the stars?"

I still don't know who Audrina Patridge is but since they teamed her up with Tony Davoloni she can stay unless it is between her and The Situation.

I probably wouldn't know who Kurt Warner is if I didn't live near St. Louis. I usually only follow quarterbacks when they get to the level of hosting Saturday Night Live. He has impressed me here as the genuinely nice guy I have heard he is.

I had heard the name Rick Fox but I have to admit I find him a lot more interesting now that I know he was married to Vanessa Williams.

I wish I didn't know who Kyle Massey is. I have never subscribed to the theory that chubby people are funnier than their peers. If he were a woman they would probably be scoring him down for his body image. The fact that he was a star on the Disney channel doesn't do much for me although it carries weight at ABC since Disney is their parent company I suppose. They probably got him cheap. (and he is worth every penny of it)

Surprisingly, I have nothing against Bristol but  apparently her costumer does. She said she wanted to dress modestly not like a frump.

I did not know who Mike Sorrentino was. But I had heard of "The Situation" and although I looked forward to watching his famous abs I didn't expect to like him. After all anyone Joy Behar dislikes is suspect in my book. But I actually like this guy. He seems to be trying which is a lot more than I can say for a certain multiple birther from last season.

I heard a disturbing report on Showbiz Tonight this week that said that in all probability either Bristol or The Situation would go home.

Nothing against you Bristol, honey but I am pretty sure you will do just as well on the "Please don't get pregnant and have a baby before wedlock" speaking circuit now as you will if you go further in the competition.

I am hoping that Mike is working very hard this week. That's what impresses me about him anyway. He seems to really be taking the competition seriously. Maybe he does actually have enough wits about him to realize that Jersey Shore and even those abs of his won't last forever. (I know little about abs, never having developed any of my own.)

But just in case this is your swan song, Mike earn your money and wear something Bristol wouldn't be caught dead in.

If You Serve it Through a Drive Through Window Shouldn't it be Fast?

I am really wanting some Hardee's hand breaded chicken tenders but quite frankly  I am afraid to go through their drive through again. I admit it I got a little testy the last time I ordered some.

It was about 9:30 one evening, a time of day I had no business eating fried chicken no matter how lightly it was hand breaded. That is not my point however. My point is I ordered these at what had been a fast food restaurant a few years ago.

I pulled up to the speaker and ordered. Only one car was ahead of me but still I waited for what seemed forever. I wrongly assumed that since I had waited so long for them to fill the order of the car ahead of me that by the time I got to the pick up window my strips would be ready. Wrong!

"How are you this evening?" the cheerful but misguided attendant asked me.

"I would be a lot better if I didn't have to wait forever for three chicken strips." I replied curtly, somehow expecting an apology. None was forthcoming. Not that I could blame her. The age of  "the customer is always right" apparently ended around the same time as  the last original episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show aired.

Instead of an apology she informed me testily that they took six and a half minutes to cook.

"You need to close you're drive through then," I informed her after the long waited for chicken strips were safely settled on the seat beside me and drove away.

Now I am afraid to go back.....EVER.

When I go through  a drive through I want my food immediately. I would prefer that I not even have to stop. I would like them to install some of those coin collection baskets like you see on the toll roads.  Then I can toss my money into them as I cruise past shouting out my order. I will leave my window rolled down and you can just throw my food into the car. I will honk to let you know I caught it as I drive off. Now that's what I would call service!

How I Lost out on Ever Being Cool

Isn't Jack Nicholson a little too old to be cool? I saw him in a preview for an upcoming film last night. He must be nearly 80. I bet he gets up at least three times every night to pee by now so how can he still be perceived as hip?  I guess the answer  is first impressions. From his early appearance in films he has been  perceived as cool so no matter how old or incontinent he gets he always will be.

I have never and probably never will be cool but I would like to try it just once for say a day. If the cool fairy gave me just one wish......now see what I mean?  There cannot possibly be a "cool fairy." Fairies are not cool. Cute perhaps. Adorable. But not cool.

I believe I missed out on my chance to be cool on the first day of junior high school. I still remember it. In the small town whereI grew up there were three elementary schools that fed into the junior high. I had the misfortune of having lived and attended elementary school on the wrong side of the tracks. Definitely not cool. We really did have  wrong side of the tracks. How I ended up there I will never know I was definitely not tough enough to survive in that environment.

Before school started on that first day we were all assembled on the bleachers in the gym waiting for the morning bell to ring. The sophisticated 8th graders were there with all the new 7th graders. Some smart alack boy I didn't know asked me a question I didn't really understand. Of course I didn't have enough sense not to answer.

"Are you queer?" he asked.

I hadn't heard of anyone being "queer". It seemed like a rather old fashioned word for a creep like him to be using. I assumed by queer he meant funny. I liked a good joke as much as anyone and I liked to believe I knew how to tell one so I responded in what I thought was a  friendly way.

"Yes!" I answered.

"He's queer!" the kid shouted to everyone within hearing range as they laughed hysterically.

I knew immediately that I had lost the question and answer portion of 7th grade initiation. (I still tend to refer to all new experiences according to what portion of the Miss America pageant they  fall under.) Thankfully the bell rang and we were all dismissed. I don't remember ever seeing him again. But somehow I had made my first impression and there was nothing I could ever do to take it back. I do not believe I have ever made a good one since.

But today at least I would have had a response for him. Today I would still answer, "Yes," but a bit more emphatically and unapologetically (provided I could still attend junior high in my fifties.)

So maybe we do need a "cool fairy." I nominate Tim Gunn.

If I had had Tim Gunn by my side on that first day of junior high he probably wouldn't have made my tormentor disappear but he could have at least pointed out the kid's lack of fashion sense as he consoled me on my way to my first hour. After all even in junior high I had a knack for coordinating my outfits without being too "matchy matchy." And that is sort of cool.

I May Have an Acting Gig for Charo

I spotted Charo on the Joy Behar show earlier this week. I had not seen her in quite a while. She must have been very young back when she was a staple on Hollywood Squares because she still looked pretty good. Either that or a lot of young women have had to sacrifice their hair for her latest weave.

According to reports the Chilean miners are set to be lifted to safety very soon and if any of them have any business sense at all they will soon be signing a major movie deal. I pray to the gods of entertainment that they don't let Lifetime handle this one.

Out of 31 minors surely one of them had cuchi cuchi mama somewhere or perhaps even a cougar type lover. Playing one of them  could be Charo's big break back into the limelight. We all know how well she can act from her Love Boat days. Or perhaps she will just make a cameo playing her guitar at one of the many church services sure to be held in celebration for the end of the miners' ordeal that are sure to be included in the picture.

She even showed a picture of her son on Joy's show. He looks just like her. In fact it made me remember something I have always secretly believed about Charo; she might not be a woman after all but a very convincing drag queen.

I Knew This Movie Would Get Bad Reviews

But I went anyway. I always check RottenTomatoes before I head out to the movies and sure enough Life as we Know It got only a 27% critics rating. Sometimes I cancel my plans to see a movie when it is rated that low but this one starred Katherine Heigl so I didn't really care. The fact that it had Josh Duhamel in it didn't hurt either.

This movie is not going to change the world. But it is a perfectly fine movie with two very agreeable stars. I knew going in that it was going to be predictable. Sometimes comedies like this bog down in the middle when the writers decide they need to make a point. Thank goodness that didn't happen here.

I was afraid that the romance they threw in between Katherine Heigle and the lovely Josh Lucas would  mire it down as well but I have to say they got out of that situation pretty efficiently, a little too efficiently perhaps. I wouldn't have minded seeing more of him.

About the only thing that really irritated me (other than the fact neither of the leading men was bare-chested enough) was the fact that Jean Smart, one of my favorite actresses appeared in the film but had nothing to do. I can only imagine that her scenes were edited out. Unfortunately this is one of those films that is good enough for one viewing but might not hold up too well on repeated viewings so renting the DVD just to watch her deleted scenes isn't likely.

Still I wish the critics could just be honest and tell the truth; that the movie is fine if you are looking for light-hearted fare with likable characters. I guess the problem is that there weren't enough explosions unless you are counting the obligatory messy diaper/baby throw up scenes. Hmmmm maybe there were more predictable elements in this thing than I realized. Still I kind of wish it had been worse so I could have written a snarkier account.
